Thank you for your in-depth research. I suspect that this is the reason why some of Trump’s staff are now getting full time body guards. The only thing that will stop Trump is taking to the streets, but recently very few newspapers reported the numbers or showed pictures. The news and large law firms are running scared. 😱
I am part of a SURJ criminal justice action team and have just returned from having met with colleagues from the Northwest Community Bail Fund so I didn’t see your essay until I got home from that meeting. I am horrified and not surprised. I also work in immigrant justice and it sounds to me like the Trump regime is following what they’re already doing with immigrants and planning to do the same with citizen prisoners. I will definitely take action and share with others in our sphere to do so as well. I really appreciate this essay and it reminds me of how appalling The news is every single day from this god awful administration.
I've been against the death penalty for a long time. It's not a deterrent, it doesn't save taxpayer dollars and it harms society as a whole. I'm also against treating prisoners as less than human as that also doesn't solve any problems, but creates more problems. If our system is "correct" then why do we keep sending so many people to prisons? We must find a better way.
Thank you so very much for this essential and powerful note. The past couple of decades of impunity for the violation of our own and international laws including the neglect of prisoners, also in the context of prior renditions and Guantanamo are now coming to haunt us now as it is being channeled by those who long to be known as cruel. If they only knew how Hitler is viewed by the Germans today. An incredible amount of people felt the need to comment in the past months how they understand for the first time how Germans could let it happen.
Like all of your writing, Sherrilyn, this is invaluable. The irony is that Trump is the one who should be incarcerated, as his rampage of theft and grift against the American people becomes more brazen by the day. The Constitution should stand in the way of any plan to send American citizens to Salvadoran jails — we still have an 8th amendment! Let’s hope that the courts can put a stop to any such effort before anyone is “disappeared,” never to return. As you have said so eloquently, conditions in many American prisons are horrendous enough, as they have been since time out of mind.
What if Biden or Obama had made a contract to pay for services in a foreign country….and then insisted he had no control over those services? Trump becomes a strongman by feigning weakness? We are up against such a corrupt tangle of SCOTUS majority, Trump, right wing billions, and capitulated media and law firms….it feels impenetrable, but we have to find a way.
Thanks again, Sherrilyn, for your wisdom and insight. I agree with everything you said. I recall that Charles Dickens wrote that how a country treats people in prison is one way to judge the character of that country. In that respect, this country has not been a shining light to the world but a place of darkness hiding in the shadows of lies. And with Trump it has only gotten darker.
This is another topic to talk to family and friends about - get people to understand that prisoners are humans just like them and deserve to be treated with the care they want to be treated. If he gets away with this, no one is safe.
Sherrilyn thank you for sounding the alarm about the potential of incarcerated US citizens being unlawfully deported.
Not only is every person in prison a human being, many innocent people are in prison because of our broken criminal justice system, the overuse of plea agreements, and the corruption inherent in a system where prosecutors and judges pander to the public by attempting to appear "tough on crime" so they can win re-election.
If we believe in redemption, we must stop dehumanizing and othering people. All of them.

Keep the facts and truth coming. Trump is outrageous.

And he is threatening immigration lawyers as well.

I so appreciate your reporting.

Thank you Sherrilyn. I'm an empathic person, and feel the coming storm. You have summarized in words, which I could not, why we should all be afraid.

The cruelty of this regime knows no bounds. How we respond matters more than we may be able to grasp at this point. https://www.dworkinsubstack.com/p/joy-reid-shares-great-news-with-scott?r=ind7&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=audio-player
