Thank you for this fierce reminder to keep our lens on our own (and South Africa’s) particular history of authoritarianism! History that’s never gone away either

On the authoritarian playbook question, Hitler banned Jews from the civil service in the practice of law in April 1933. My father lost his livelihood then. (With a deferred silver lining, that he eemigrated to America the first opportunity.)

Again, this administration is following the worst authoritarian models of history.

Pam Bondi should look in a mirror, and then she should look at Rudolph W. Giuliani. The Trump administration is not going to last forever, thank the Lord!

Absolutely, Sherrilyn! I just read an article on 'Above the Law' regarding this issue and the Executive Order in question. Conversely, investigating lawyers for the past eight years requires the DOGE to perform its purported job, as these investigations are a waste of taxpayers' money. I agree that Trump's imminent threat represents a déjà vu of authoritarian practices during the civil rights era and are acts of retaliation, which contradict the principles of American democracy. The courts must fulfill their role in ensuring checks and balances.

Be sure to read David Lat’s Substack article dated March 21, titled "Paul Weiss Cuts a Deal with Donald Trump." I disagree that Weiss' agreement reflects existing policies and practices. Instead, it represents a concession to Trump's overreach and authoritarian practices.
