I heard you speak at the Juneteenth conversation with Minnesota Humanities Center. You were brilliant. It was so inspiring thank you for this article. We are still all grieving Melissa. Thank you for this powerful piece and tribute.
Melissa Hortman is martyr to this criminal, violent, hateful regime. She is the model of a Democratic leader as you show in these stories—working for the good with integrity and grit all these years. So many feel free to scapegoat Democrats in a time when we are standing up to the fascism that has gobbled Republicans, media—even the Supreme Court majority. But there they are, Democrats across the country, doing the essential work, even now.
Your understanding of “what happened to…” Mike Lee, Lindsay Graham, Tim Scott, Joni Ernst and others is incredibly significant. The capacity to be seduced and corrupted always lay within character. You reminded me of Karen Bass’s recent press conference when she said in congress she had known Kristi Noem for ten years and today doesn’t recognize her. But like the others, the capacity to do anything for wealth and power was always there— and I’d add the capacity for cruelty.
The hope is that unlike Germans in 1939 millions of us are not turning away.
I especially appreciate that you referred to Melissa Holtman as an ally. My Japanese American husband and his family were incarcerated for three years without due process in an American concentration camp during WWII. And at that time there were no allies.
Your understanding and analysis of what we are living through is deeply meaningful to me.
Thank you for your comments, Sherrilyn. You're an attorney so please tell me if the American people have a legal right to ask for a competency and medical evaluation of our President? He is clearly showing signs of cognitive decline that may indicate his inability to lead at this time. Can Congress require a neuropsychological evaluation? We are all witnessing his inappropriate remarks and actions. This needs to be addressed by a licensed physician/ psychiatrist right away before he causes more harm to others.
Well, at least they aren't Black (LOL). I’m Black, mind you. I understand the statement fully, but I couldn’t help but laugh because true diversity really does matter. It outweighs ignorance any day.
Sherrilyn, I agree wholeheartedly that these flawed characters are entrenched in their very being; they make the KKK look minute. No, Sherrilyn – What we are witnessing goes beyond words; it is a spiritual warfare.
In writing this response, it came to me that “the lion shall lie down with the lamb.” Symbolically, this phrase offers a glimpse of hope, justice, and a vision for the future that transcends the discord and turmoil we currently face.
My sincere prayers are with the Hortman family, Minnesota, and the U.S. I call on our Lord and Savior for divine intervention.
